Group Update

The Joint Medical Emergency Preparedness Group (JMEPG) was founded in 1978 to serve the health and medical community by providing a collaboration space to work on preparedness issues. The Group has evolved over the years with many accomplishments to its name. Today the pace of change within healthcare is faster than it has ever been before. To meet the needs of our community it is time to change.

Changes

In April 2026 it has been decided to reorganize JMEPG. This decision was not made lightly. But after years of declining engagement and increasing demands upon the member organizations it is necessary.

  • Community Partnership—we are partnering with the Alaska Hospital and Healthcare Association (AHHA) in this new chapter.
  • Scope – while disasters strike locally preparedness is more of a team sport than ever. To broaden the Group’s impact and strengthen our work we are expanding our scope, with AHHA’s help, statewide.
  • A New Name – to reflect our new identity we are changing our name to the Medical Emergency Readiness Group.
  • Mission – formal mission statements and strategic direction will be developed by the Group in the coming months. However, our core mission of promoting healthcare preparedness, supporting our communities and member organizations while providing a space for collaboration remains the same.
  • What Comes Next – AHHA will be assisting us with a new website and we will be retiring this one. Information on future meetings and our evolving plans will be broadly shared as they are developed.

I thank you all for your help in all the tremendous work that has been done over the years and welcome you to join us as we blaze this new path for Alaska.

Thank you,

Michael Kubler – past chair JMEPG and chair of MERG
